Journal 6



“Filming Compassion”

This journal article has been my favorite so far. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Communication Design with an option in Media Arts. I’ve made many movies, commercials, and educational videos. This was right down my alley! The article talked about having video production classes in our schools. Across the nation schools are increasingly adding a service-learning component in their curriculum. Why not video production? Janet Bremer, a teacher at Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy in Cincinnati, Ohio had her video production class make educational films. Her co-author Marilyn Clark helped plan the video assignment. The class got into teams and selected from a list of nonprofit organizations. These included: An after-school care facility for inner-city children, an organization that provides high quality used clothing for low income customers, an inner-city school, and a center that provides hot meal for homeless and low income clients. The nonprofit organizations were told once completed the video would be their property. Due to the fact they were student-produced videos, professional-quality results were not guaranteed. The students came up with storyboards and shooting schedules. The nonprofits came up with educational video ideas that they could use. The students did all the filming, editing, and even added music to their videos. Once completed, everyone was amazed! The students did superb jobs and they looked very professional. Not only did the students learn about the process and technology of making a movie, they also got to spend quality time at these nonprofit organizations. Everyone involved in this project benefited.

Questions:

How easy would it be to have a video production class in your school?


It depends if the school has the funds to support a class like this. I don’t think that many schools would be able to afford all the equipment. Students would end up having to share few pieces of equipment and lessons would be delayed. This also takes up a lot of time outside of school. With so many kids involved in sports and after school activities, and not to mention tons of homework, would there be time?

What is a good age to start a video production class?

Middle school would be a good age to introduce video production, but I’d wait for hands on until high school. Equipment is very expensive and if the students must complete their videos outside of school, who is responsible if something breaks? That is a lot of pressure on a student. I know I was scared in college taking home equipment. I also think high school students would be able to appreciate the assignment more. They also are more likely to be able to drive themselves to the locations.

“Moderating and Ethics for the Classroom Instructional Blog”

Depending on the grade level and subject you are teaching, classroom blogs can be a great instructional tool. It introduces students to technology and classroom discussions. Instead of focusing on an open oral discussion in class, it drives students to think about their answers before having to write them in an area for all their peers to see. It would important over the course of the school year to actively engage the students to use the class blog. Without participation, the blog will just die in cyberspace. Another great way to use the blog, is for peer editing. This ensures all participation. For those in class who are shy and don’t like to participate, this is a great way for them to get their thoughts and opinions expressed. In our EDUC 422 course, we use the blog to answer questions and then post for our teacher’s review. A great example is this very journal.  I have enjoyed sharing my journal with my husband and he can see what I’m doing in this class when I’m gone each Tuesday and Thursday nights. Using a blog in my very own classroom could let parents be apart of our online community.

Do you plan on using a blog in your classroom?


If I were to teach on a middle or high school level, then yes, it would be beneficial for all my students to use. Since blogging is popular among individuals outside the classroom too, educating my students on safety and monitoring their own online behavior is crucial. I plan on teaching elementary school, and this may be too young to have all students participate, but I could give the basic lessons. This way if they use blogs in their upcoming classes, or outside the school, they will be better prepared

How could you actively engage parents in a classroom blog?

One way would be to have them observe their child’s blog and sign off that they have seen it. This way if there are problems, their parents can see it first hand. On the opposite note, if their child is excelling, it’s a way to gain praise. Another way to get parents involved is to have a parent’s online blog. Parents can chat with each other about assignments, carpools or share great workshops, tutors, after school activities, etc. For parents who are scared of technology, I could hold a workshop at night to teach them and get them started. This could be a problem if there is a lack of computers in the students’ homes.

"Social Justice...Choice or Necessity?"

This article was a wake up call for all teachers. It's time to incorporate technology into our classrooms now! Whether we like it or not, our students are being born in the technology age. If they are not equipped with the knowledge they need regarding technology, they will be disadvantaged in their future university or jobs. By the time our kindergartners are in the work force, 80% of jobs will involve being technologically fluent. It still is up to us to decide if we want or how much technology we will use in our classrooms. Technology is all around us readily available. Although many households have computers which kids play on, some do not and are not as skilled as their peers. Again, it is up to us to inform them that they can still become familiar by locating resources in their community. Some of these include libraries, community technology centers, and the Boys and Girls Club. For the schools that have no access, there are also options. There are computer reimbursement web sites where schools can get them as well as sites that have discounted computers. More software programs are free and readily available. It is important for educators to address social justice through technology because it will influence future education and work experiences. Social justice affects all teachers and students. Both need to strive to surround themselves with technology. Lessons that relate to real word situations involving technology will prepare our students to keep up in our every changing technological world.

Do you plan on using technology in your classroom?

That is easy, YES! I personally love educating myself about technology. I’m almost afraid if I don’t learn new things my (future) children will be smarter than me when they are five! When I was in grammar school we were already learning about the computer. The only educational game at the time was Oregon Trail. I absolutely loved that game. Boy, has the educational game world come a very long way. There are endless educational tools found on the web. I defiantly want to prepare my students for their future, and I will do so by implementing technology in my classroom.

Do you think teachers should be able to choose to use technology in their classrooms, or do you think it should be mandated?

I think all teachers need to at least incorporate some use of technology, and this does not include using an over-head projector. Teachers that are computer challenged should be forced to take basic courses. It will only benefit them in the future too. Some teachers are scared to learn but it is crucial in order to educate our students so they can keep up with peers. It is inevitable that technology will affect everyone’s futures and who can say how far it will go? Anyone for lunch on the moon?…

"Real-Life Migrants on the MUVE" by Ross Perkins & Cathy Arreguin

Since the late 1970’s, Multi-user virtual environments (MUVE) have existed. These are programs that use animated characters and can build virtual world, which they control. Today, these virtual worlds are moving into our classrooms. Dozens of colleges and universities use these programs to teach both traditional and distance learning. High school and middle school educators are starting to focus on the Teen grid, which is designed for 13-17 year old students. The Linden Lab has approved these. Linden Lab is the creator if MUVE and has generated a great deal in the recent months of media attention. Educators are implementing these virtual worlds for their students and revising curriculum to include experiences on the MUVE. Some of these examples include: Constructing a time line about events of WWII, creating Ellis Island (complete with a museum and even a math lesson on geometry), Peer tutoring, and reenactments for history or works of fiction. Users can build virtually anything and change it to any 3-D look or size they want. Students use a great deal of creativity, research and communication. Another group of students MUVE is affecting positively is students with disabilities. The virtual environment helps them focus their attention leading to better retention and performance. There is all different kind of tools to use that appeal to a broad spectrum of the student’s intelligences. Using MUVE is our classrooms today are a great way to help build on our student’s passions and educate them on the world around us. They use different skills to think critically about their projects and have endless possibilities to create their own virtual worlds.

How could I implement this in my 4th grade classroom?

I could introduce MUVE to them and give examples of how this could take our lessons and integrate them into a virtual world. I think this age group might be too young to actively involve them. But, I could get them thinking about technology as a learning tool. Technology is only going to get more advanced and more complicated. If these 4th graders get a head start now they will excel in any class that involves technology.

How can I get this program into my school?

Before discussing bring MUVE into my school I would research all costs, and time it would take to educator teachers to learn the program. Most classrooms already have a computer but not nearly enough to accommodate the whole class. Constructing a time line and how I would incorporate this into my curriculum. I would do all the research about how these programs benefit students. This way I could answer all questions and concerns the principal might have. I would make clear the importance of incorporating this program into our school.

"Your Google Guide" by Doug Johnson

Google is a genius tool on the web that makes our lives easier. You can use this search engine to find anything. You can even google yourself. I have, but sadly enough I am nowhere to be found. There are quite a few other Allison Schmitz's out there who are quite accomplished and have impressive google links. Google has helped me research papers, find vendors for my wedding, and even find out how to clean red wine off my in-laws white carpet. The way google works is the more links from other web sites that page has, it is placed higher in the search results. Sponsored links that pay google, as part of advertising, will be clearly visible on the search results list. There is a lot more to google that just searching the web. A few of the specialized tools offered are: Image search, Book search, Maps and Scholar ( which looks only in academic publications). You can also sign up for a free newsletter if you are a librarian. Google calls this their Google Librarian Central newsletter. We should all become very familiar with google and everything it offers. It will make your life easy too!


QUESTIONS:

What words do you google the most?

Right now I have been researching window boxes for my porch. I just can't seem to find the right one. This has been going on for months now. I refuse to settle, and google is helping me research prices and options. But, I'm still waiting to find the perfect website for my flower boxes.



Beside using the search engine tool, what other features have you used?

I like to use google maps and use the satellite feature to look up my house, my mom's, my friends, etc. I use this for fun. I also love to use google images. I used it for my wedding newsletters I put together, as well as projects for school.

Introducing Allison Schmitz




Hi Everyone! I am from Palos Verdes Estates which is located outside of Los Angeles. I am a triplet and the only girl. We also have an older brother who is two years older. I attended Silver Spur Elementary School (which my mom taught at so at one time there were five of us at one school). I attended Malaga Cove Intermediate School, and graduated from Palos Verdes Peninsula High School in 1996.

I use technology in my everyday life. Some devices that I use are my cellphone, laptop, ipod, and navigation system in my car. I depend on them to help make my everyday life easier. I am a PC user but I have to admit the MAC is growing on me. I really enjoy learning about technology and I'm the tech in our household.

The College of Education Mission Statement did not influence my decision to attend this university. But, I think it is extremely important and I absolutely agree with it. If we are to be in a position of educating children we need to be caring, thoughtful, and fair. Let's face it, in today's society we have a melting pot of cultures and more children with disabilities. It is our job to treat each one with respect and to make sure that they can be productive and educated members of society. Anyone that can not commit to every issue stated should pick a different profession.
